Start by teaching him sit before you give him attention. Completely ignore him when you come home, and wait until he is calm before talking to him. Attention (positive OR negative) is areward to a dog, so he only get's attention when he is being good. If he jumps on you, turn around and ignore him (no words, even yelling or saying no is attention) until he has all 4 on the floor. Dogs do what works, and if jumping on you gets attention, he will keep doing it. Also, and this is important - tell EVERYONE else to do the same. This is the hard part, because people usually say - "Oh, I don't mind", tell them YOU MIND. What might be cute for a little puppy to do won't be so cute when he's full grown, or when you are on your way out the door wearing a nice outfit and he has muddy paws! Just remember to be consistent. Also you might want to try clicker training. Start by clicking the clicker and giving a treat. Do this a cuple of times until the dog thinks "that noise means something good" then use the clicker to indicate to the dog the exact second he is exhibiting the behavior you want (ie, his feet are on the floor, or he sits, etc..) that's how you can let him know when he's doing what he should and he gets rewarded instantly because you can click faster than you can give him a treat. At first you will give him a treat every time you click, then half the time, etc. With a clicker, you can train your dog to do just about anything as long as you take the time to, have patience, and be consistent.

Puppies jump because in the pack that is what they are suppose to do. Fortunately dogs are quick to learn human. The puppy jumps to get attention, do not give it. Instruct any one who is being jumped on to "check for rain", they should cross there hands on their chest and appear to be looking up. Do not give any attention to the puppy. The second he stops jumping, notice him. Of course the first times he will start to jump again and that is your cue to ignore the puppy. Soon your puppy will learn in the human world the way to get attention is to stand or if you want sit.

Honestly, when my dog jumps up on me, I just knee her in the chest, and she stops! It sounds kind of brutal, but it works. My dog, though, is an 80 lb Shepherd, and you have to be pretty firm with them. Just make it really clear to the puppy that jumping up on you is a bad thing. You can teach her to sit, and have her sit when you come home, and pet her/reward her for sitting. That way, when you come home, she will automatically sit, looking for attention. When she does jump up on you, punish her, and then tell her to sit, then praise her for sitting. It won't take long before she figures out that jumping = bad, while sitting = good.
Hope this helps!
