Airlines vary a tiny bit, but 80% of them allow one carry-on bag, 9"x14"x22" plus one "personal item" such as a purse, briefcase or laptop case. A lot of people cheat on those dimensions by a few inches. A few cheat by a lot. You won't be the first to board the flight (first-class passengers, families with kids and old folks and us elite travellers do). So there might not be overhead space when you board and you'll end up with your bag at your feet. If you get stuck with a big bag that doesn't fit anywhere, the flight attendents can check it from the cabin into the hold, but it is a hassle for everyone for you to lug it backwards up the aisle to the front of the plane.
A school bookbag is fine. A large backpack like is used for a week-long backpacking trip is not. You'd have to check that. Ideal would be to check a large backpack and carry-on a bookbag that you could lash to the large backpack at the other end. Keep your iPod, a book, toiletries, clean shirt, socks and undies with you. The bare minimum for 24 hours.
Note that after this London, liquid-explosive scare, you have to check all liquids (shampoo, cosmestics, beverages, etc).
A really great idea, within the 48 states, is to UPS your bag to your destination (hotel, school, grandmother, etc). Call ahead to double check it is okay with them, but then you save schlepping the bag around on both ends and waiting 20-40 minutes wating for it to show up at the luggage caurosel.

Go to the airline's web site. They will have a place where they specify the dimensions of acceptable carry-on luggage.
I'd rethink the part about keeping it with you, since that's going to be really horrible for whoever is sitting next to you (there is not enough room in plane seats for a normal person to be comfortable -- even when the person sitting next to them doesn't have an elephantine piece of luggage in the way).
Pack in such a way that, when you put it in the overhead, you can get to the compartments that have stuff you want to access during the flight. Take out the first thing you want to use, then put your backpack in the overhead. When you want something else, you can leave the bag in the overhead, and get just what you want.

Just depends on the size. Check with the airline to get the dimensions of the largest size carry-on you can take on the plane with you. A normal school-sized backpack should be just fine and should fit under the seat in front of you. If it doesn't fit there, then you're required to put in the overhead bin.

General flight rules dictate that your carry on luggage/backpack will go into the overhead storage bins. However, you may select an item or two from your backpack and place them in your pocket once on the airplane, and prior to storage in the bin. Your prime concern should be to only carry items with you which will pass through security. Once on the plane, how you entertain yourself without causing undue discomfort to the other passengers is your business.

you can carry it on the flight if it is a standard size back pack. They prefer you to put items in the overhead compartment, but will also let you put smaller bags, purses, under the seat in front of you, where you can access it

It has to be under a certain size (the same size or smaller as the standard carryone bag)
You may have to check it, at least for take-off and landing. It needs to fit securely under your seat for it to not be in a bin at that time. You are allowed to get up during the flight and get into the bin.
Hint: pad the ipod and anything fragile. Sometimes they overstuff the overhead bins and your bag may get crunched when they slam the door shut.

All carry ons must be able to fit UNDER The seat in front of you OR you must put it in the overhead compartment. Also - if it's too big - it must be checked!!!

If you are flying out of the UK to the US, you will not be allowed to carry anything on with you. If you are within the US you can as long as you comply to the new security measures. Check the link below for what is allowed when traveling within the States.

sure of direction! do no longer overlook to acquire some video clips until eventually now so which you would be able to watch in-flight, and be confident to totally value your battery only in case you the airline does not have electric shops on the airplane. and placed across your guy or woman earphones!
