Women love spa treatments or equally pampering things. A trip can be a great gift (either a romantic getaway, fun for the whole family or something she can do alone or with a girlfriend). A fancy dinner or some other excuse for her to get dressed up is enjoyed by a lot of women.
I am nearly 40, and I can tell you 2 of the best gifts I ever got from my husband were:
A Flying lesson at the local airport (I think it only cost about $50 for 1 time up)
A hot air balloon ride
It is my feeling that women in this age range very rarely get to try something new or something just for themselves, with all the demands of their day-to-day life and something that puts them in a new situation can be loads of fun.
Peace!
PS - let me just say too, that Botox i NOT a good gift (unless your mum has been talking about wanting to get it). Gifts like this can be very dangerous. My dad got my mom a fancy bathroom scale one year and boy was he sorry. He thought she would love it, but she was very offended!

Mom's work very hard as you know. It's non stop, they work outside the home, then return and start all over again, cleaning cooking. So let me tell you what all moms would really love.A romantic escape, somewhere by the sea or perhaps the mountains or lake.
Tell you dad to keep it a surprise but to look up some vacation websites, expedia or TripAdivsor.com. He knows what yourm mom likes, so he will know exactly what to book. Tell him to keep it secret. Then on the morning of her birthday or the night before a taxi will arrive and he will whisk her off to the most romantic escape and the best birthday she has ever had in her life.

Gift cards are what's in style these days. Or a few hours at a day spa moms like to get pampered every now and then, but good ole fashioned roses deliverd to the Job, Nice dinner and some Dancing always does the trick.

tell him to go to a rubbish tip, and take a rose.
Place the rose upright amongest all the rubbish and take a photo of it.
place the photo in a frame and give it to your mum explaining, the rubbish is the rest of the world..and the flower that has sprouted up is her!
He'll get some great action later that night!!!

I think a pampering session at a day spa. That sounds so good doesn't it? Or even a romantic evening together at a nice resturant that offers a dance floor so that he can sweep her off her feet once more. Ohhhh, I wish my husband liked to dance..lol

A weekend getaway for 2.
Or a day's coupon for a spa.
If they like the outdoors, he could plan a fancy picnic somewhere from their past...
Oh, and by the way, just want to mention that I call my mom Mum too! (she doesn't like Mom) It's just rare to see that if you're not in England....but you probably are.....lol.

If you are near a big lake or the coast, he should take her out for an evening cruise. My dad did that for my mom and they really enjoyed it. You get dinner, a show, and you slowly circle the marina/lake for the evening. It's pretty romantic.

Something very special to her, maybe relating to your parents' courtship.
Better yet, a dinner, night out, or a short trip! Spending time together - the memories will last a lifetime.
