then curl and leave curling iron in for about 5-7 seconds

Take a section at a time. Hold the curling iron vertical. Get it as close to the root as possible without burning yourself. It is easier if you have a marcel iron instead of a spring iron to do this as you can open the iron without much effort. Anyway, begin turning the iron collecting more and more hair in it until you are all the way down the hair shaft. then depending on the iron you have. either unwind it or open the iron and slip the iron down and out of the hair.

get a small curling iron... 1 inch barrel or so... put the hair in the curling iron at the base of the hair next to the scalp and run the iron down the hair to the end (this kind of preps the hair). you want the end of the hair to be in the clamp near the base of the curling iron (near the handle part) then curl the hair around the iron moving up the barrel so all the hair touches the hot barrel evenly... makes a nice even curl instead of having super curly at end of hair and not so curly near your scalp... when pulling the barrel out of your hair gently open and close the clamp just a little bit at a time and bit by bit slowly pull the barrel out pulling down on the curling iron handle towards the floor, end of the iron towards the top of your head... this maintains the curling shape without pulling it out when you remove the barrel of the curling iron from your hair.... do not touch the hair until it is completely cooled... heat creates the curl... cooling sets it so it stays.
