Okay, here's the story... I've always been passionate about the performing arts, even since elem, school. Well, I got older and decided to major in theatre, but the department is very unprofessional and everybody's telling me I can't get a job when I get out, so I left and changed my major to English. THe problem is is that I am TOTALLY passionate about the performing arts... Is this just a " pipe dream?" Should I major in this, or stick with english, the safer bet? Please help!

You can continue your major in english and still taking some acting lessons like elective credits. Or you can still studying theater and the credits in education to be a teacher. That way you can find a job once you finish the college. Other choice is to Study the BA degree and the MA degree in Theater, that way you have better choices to find a job, for example, with MA degree you can teach in a city college or in an University as a teacher.

Is really difficult to have a good income just from the arts in these days, and because the BA degree in Arts (Acting, Music and Dance) is so specialized is really difficult to find a good normal job.

I studied Music, (Voice Performance) I had no job, I was literally doing nothing. Then I decided to study the MA de gree. Once I finished I Had a job and I have now my own Voice Studio. I also sing more.

People don't respect you if you have only a BA degree in any art they consider you are just playing and they don't think is a serious career. MA degree is Better for Arts and of course PH Degree, I will start my PH degree next year.

Well Good Luck

If you are truly passionate about drama, change schools. Not all departments are like the one you are in. As far as getting acting jobs, yep, it's really tough. Be prepared to wait tables and bunches of other jobs for a long time. Basically, be willing to do the starving artist bit. My son, who is a HS senior this year, is going to major in theater education--he wants to teach on the university level. You might consider that. The only school I know of that offers that major is Columbus State University in GA. It is part of the University of GA system. There must be others--google them. Good luck with your choices.

Get your degree in something more solid, and minor in Performing Arts. That way you can make some money (instead of waiting tables) while you are seeking your theatrical fame and fortune. Nothing more useful than a business degree that keeps a fair amount of cash rolling in while you seek out the fun opportunities you love.

If you can't handle rejection now, acting in the theatre is not the career for you. Competition for roles is vicious and you'll get beaten down emotionally everyday and may never make enough to support yourself solely on acting but it's about the passion and keeping at it. You can't just quit in acting and if you can, it may not be what you really want.

Find a better acting school. You can always come back to English later.
