immigration would be such a devastating issue for the future of The U.S.?The statue was given to the U.S. as a gift from France. It was based on the friendship The U.S. and France developed during the American Revolution. You think he might have removed the words; "Give me your tired, give me your poor....."?

Actually, a Greenwich Village poetess won a contest and had the poem selected, not by the government, but by a community service organization raising money to build the base for the statue.

It was hardly legislative action.

We don't live by Ring around the Rosie, either.

(although, actually, that was supposed to be a jingle to remember signs of the plague, in Europe, so perhaps that was a bad example.)

At the time Cleveland needed laborers to build a nation....

Immigration has not been such a devastating issue, you assume all immigrants, legal or illegal, are a bad thing. Its a bit hypocritcal of you to think in such a way, being back then it was OK? But today it is evil?

Its called progress and its a good thing. You don't think we have more to build and create as a nation? Are we stagnant? Have we stop being innovative? Immigrants bring those things to this nation....I mean all immigrants, not only legal...

Our acceptance of immigrants is not the issue. It is the illegal immigrants that are the problem.
This is a different age than it was than. Even than we had statues and laws to come to the country. They were just a little more lenient.
Regardless of what our relationships are like now, and what struggles are being faced, it is a reminder of our history. A reminder of where we came from.
Do you give away things with sentimental value because the person who gave it to you passed on? Because that time in your life is over?
It is symbolism. It is who we are as a nation. Even if we can't accept all who wish to come to this country.

not necessarily at the time when Grover Cleavland was president emigrants were a major source of cheap labor. ( and for many companies in the Us, still are) Also the Us was still expanding at that time. U.S. citizens now do not feel that there is enough room to keep expanding and many are already feeling threatened by their jobs being sent overseas so when they see immigrants getting their jobs they get upset, plus there has always been a period of years for naturalization to take place and a lot of illegals are wanting to totally skip the naturalization process, which is what a lot of people are mad about.

No. America still stands as refuge for all those 'yearning to be free'. But you can't have a country without laws and citizens that follow them! The American and French Revolutions were rages against Tyranny, not Bureaucracy. The Lady still stands for our commitment to the World. And she weeps daily at the violation of her precious borders.

The words to the poem you are citing were written by an american, to be placed, not on the statue, but rather affixed on the pedestal, upon which the statue is mounted.

Immigrants weren't legal or illegal in those days, everyone was welcome. It wasn't until the stock market crashed and there was rampant unemployment that the US needed to regulate immigration.

hell yes if he knew that illegals from Mexico who from the Mexican-American war had no friendship with America would flood America in an evil attempt to take control by attempting to subvert the laws of America... I wonder how many illegals voted for George Dubya so that they could get more cocaine into this country?
