Many are dogmatists. Many scientists work really hard to get their theories tested and acknowledged. Once they pusblish their findings from whatever experiment they did tons of scientists from all over do independent experiments and try to reproduce the finding. Theories are subject to lots of testing and their is always the possibility of some randon group of scientists on the other side of the country screwing up your findings in their own experiment and throwing off the research for a while. It is a long tedious process and takes lot of hard work. To even be considered a true scientific theory and not just a guess you need to be able to produce something like 90 some odd percent accuracy in all of the testing done. I cant remember the exact percent but it is in the 90's. If it is finally accepted after much time, money, and debate, who would not be defensive and dogmatic about their findings!
In religion, many are so old and have taken so long to build up and organize that religious leaders can also be dogmatic. Really religious people put a lot of faith, time, and even money into their religions. This would account for why they get so defensive when people question them.
The only problem is that all this defensiveness makes new ideas somewhat hard to hear.

Science is subject to experimental proof to prove a theory. Theological concepts are not and cannot be proven. I am aware that the leadership reins in both areas tend to be held by men (mostly) who enjoy power and being in the spotlight, in fact, I have observed this close at hand. May type more later PS From an old seminary grad.,(M Div) boy are you in for an education! Been there, done that. Hope you are open to broader concepts than what you are being shown. You can't learn it all in school, LOL!

Difference:
Scientific knowledge is testable.
Religious dogma is not.
Even if some scientists are dogmatic, others will shoot them down if their pet theory turns out to be wrong. As for radically new ideas, once their proponents are able to come up with repeatable tests that other scientists can do, and the results are in favor of the new idea, it will be accepted (eventually, anyway). So science on the whole is anti-dogmatic. Unlike religion.

"Religion is the ignorant man's science." ~ Unknown
You said: "If a theory is widly held as correct, it is nearly impossible to have new ideas accepted."
That is simply not true. Of course, scientists are human, and some of them are inclined to resist change and argue strenuously to protect their life's work... but that is just a part of what makes science so vibrant.

They may seem to be working in opposite directions but I do not believe that his is the case. Both religious & scientific peoples search for the truth. However, both seek the truth in different ways. Religious people seek truth through faith, introspection, & obedience to religious dogmas. Scientists attemt to find through through scientific method, theory, and experimentation. Perhaps a combination of both are required to find the ultimate truth of existence.

They work in opposite directions.
Science is looking for answers to questions and religion is full of answers that may not be questioned.
The only time religious doctrine changes is when science forces it to.
Why would man need to develop something handed down from a god?

I think they have a common interest , to know the truth about man and his origins . The problem is scientists won't take the Bible seriously . They will if something happens as the Bible prophesys . They are kinda like the Israelites , bull headed and stiff-necked

Hahaha! They are not even close to the same thing. Science is hypothesis driven, experimentally tested, and requires data for interpretation. Religion just makes stuff up.

most people just assume that we Cristian's are following what we believe by only faith but i have doubts and have compared Christianity to other religions and i have yet to prove Christianity wrong.(see it is a calculated faith and Christianity has a much higher credibility rate then any other religions) I'm not in search of a religion but of a truth and until now all roads have lead me to Christianity. until now what i believe has never been proven wrong(to me at least)and anyone who says it has been proven wrong has the freedom to tell me how. if you think you can PROVE Christianity wrong or if you have any questions about what i believe or are just plain curious please contact me at Ciao_neck@hotmail.com
God bless

If you study the nature of God and his relationship to man you will see, since the beginning of time, he has instructed his children. Adam was a prophet, he taught his children of God. Through the ages God has always spoken through prophets as his mouthpiece.
Revelation from God is how he communicates with His children. A church without revelation is missing the true gift of the Holy Ghost. The Lords true church, has prophets who speak directly with Jesus Christ and receive revelation for the instruction and edification of its members.
God can do anything he wants, but he usually follows the same patterns. In our day He has done this through restoring his church on earth. Correcting and bringing the fulness of the gospel of Jesus Christ in the latter days.
Science works much the same. Science is always changing, or should I say our understanding of science is always changing when old ideas are proven to be untrue or not in conformity to supposed theory. I believe all truth can be circumscribed into one whole. Eventually all will be understood.
I believe that by the grace of god, he allows us to understand the elements and how they work. However, the elements obey God's command regardless of how powerful man thinks he is. God might allow certain matter or elements to be manipulated temporarily for man to exercise his agency. But eventually this power will either be given to one to create or destroy. That is why it is essential for us to prove ourselves to God and begin to understand and prove ourselves to ourselves to know where we stand.
All things are possible with God, as humans we need to direct our will to the Fathers. We will be tested to be able to seek the truth. We must be willing to change when evidence is shown that proves itself to be true.
