I have a cannon eos digital rebel xt.When I take the pictures and I look on the lcd screen they look fine,but when I down load them to the computer they are really dark.Any help would be appreciated.

There could one or combination of following reasons-
(1) Your computer monitor is not properly calibrated
(2) Exposure setting on your camera is incorrect. Change EV value
(3) Aperture value is too low.. try using Auto or other ready made modes to see differences
(4) Inadequate light in the scene. Slow the shutter speed
(5) Use flash for portrait pictures as shadows could be too much strong and may darken overall picture.
If none of the above is true, very likely the camera sensor has issues.

You can change a setting on your camera. It's called the EV value. It should be at zero, put it up to around +1.3EV for better results.
Might be really simple... but is the brightness on your monitor too low?
And finally, if the pictures are too dark, use a photo editing program to up the brightness. (also put up the contrast a little cause it makes the pictures loads better)

Maybe the light in the room is dim.Try taking pictures in a room where the light is brighter.
