Well, since he gave you a quick bite, he was not acting on agression, he was telling you he's the boss. You have to be the boss. He didn't really hurt you this time, but what about next time? Or if he bites someone else? I definitley agree on you checking out "The Dog Whisperer" on National Geographic. Also: Follow these steps to become the Alpha with out a fight - First, when you come home, IGNORE your dog. No eye contact, no talking to him, no touching. When wolves come back from a hunt, this is what the Alpha does. Wait a FULL 5 minutes and then talk to him, play with him, etc. but only if he is being quiet at that time. Your attention is his reward for good behavior, so make sure he's being good. Step 2. When feeding him, prepare his food and leave it on the counter. Get yourself a cracker or whatever, and eat it slowly while ignoring your dog, when you're done, then he gets fed. (Alphas always eat first) Step 3. When you go outside with your dog, you ALWAYS go first. (Again, that's what Alpha's do) You need to communicate with him on his level in his language, and since dogs don't speak human, we have to communicate with actions rather than words. I also make my dogs sit and stay at mealtimes until I give them the OK to eat. These steps put you in the boss's chair without force or a fight. The Alpha dog isn't the biggest or the strongest necessarily, so don't assume your the leader just because your bigger or smarter or stronger. I had some mild agression problems with my Boxer until I followed these steps and now she is a happier dog because she doesn't have the resposibilities of Alpha. She can just have fun.

Well he was givena treat and you were trying to take it away from him which is not a good thing to try, plus you hit him. I'd say thats an expected response for a dog and he warned you with a growl. After a dog has a a bone or rawhide it's best to just let them be and not try to take it away, your response to him taking it was probably what caused the bite. Him stealing the bone may have been him palying around or possibly the heat. It was probably just a one time event. In the future take a growl as a warning, you cna respond to a growl in a verbal way like yelling hey in an angry tone but don't do anything physical after a growl. I hope your hand feels better soon.

Looks like everyone here is making excuses for your dog. The bottom line is: You should be able to take ANYTHING from your dog ANYTIME. Period. Yes, this is something that should have been taught when the dog was a pup, but it is to late to fret that now. You need a GOOD trainer (not a Petsmart trainer or the like, but someone whose life career is dog training) NOW. If the dog has bitten once, he will bite again unless properly reconditioned to respect your authority. Your dog needs to learn that you are the leader, because he lives in a human society with human rules, not a dog pack with dog rules. This is not something you can deal with onn your own--you need a professional. Incidents like this break down trust between dog and owner, and require help from someone who is knowledgable on dog behavior as well as owner behavior to show you how to rebalance the situation and repair the trust. Without this, the biting will escalate and eventually someone will be really hurt and/or the dog will have to be put to sleep. This situation can be turned around if you start now, but requires a lot of work and dedication. Hope you feel better.

Thats a hard question. I think it is your fault mainly just because a dog cannot be held responsible for it actions, thay have no concience. Now I do believe that dogs can be trained right. BUt let see the problem here. German Shepard + Pig Ear= dont put your hand near the ear or his mouth. especially if the dog is a male. They are more aggresive and territorial with their food. You might wanna go see a dr.

Much to most people's surprise, you should NEVER play tug-of-war with a dog. It becomes a contest of will and power and he bit you, so now he is the boss. You can train a dog to "let go" when playing, but you shouldn't yank and pull until you win.
Pigs ears (are gross, fattening and cause diarrhea) are almost irresistable to most dogs. You were teasing him, not playing with him. Then you "hit" him, which was threatening to him. It's time to take your power back, don't let him be aggressive toward you!! Have you ever seen The Dog Whisperer on TV? Check it out, you can learn a lot and it won't cost you anything. Good Luck!

I would not give my dog pig ears, snouts, or raw hides, because they can get a piece off big enough to cause bloat. Last I heard it was about $2,500.00 to fix. The next time you want to teach him some tricks use something small, soft, and quickly eaten, so that you can move on with training. Like a hot dog cut into small slices and then cut into quarters. The next time he does something like that, take and push his head down to the floor, and put your hand over his muzzle and say in a stern voice, BAD, FOOIE, BAD. This will show him that you are the dominant one. You don't have to be rough or HIT him. I hope this has helped. Good luck.

My dog just bit my boyfrlend two days ago. My boyfriend and I live together and Oscar is our dog. We both had him from when Oscar was 8 weeks old. It was our fault I guess, becaue when he was growling at us his mind was unstable. Oscar has never done this before.
Our situation was different than yours. It sounds to me that your dog is protective over it's food. When you are trying to teach him tricks try with bit sized treats. Because a pig ear is like a bone and you should never try to take that back from him.
Also when dogs are in that state of mind we need to be calm to try not to trigger that type of behavior in dogs.
Try watching the Dog Whisperer. His show has really helped me understand some things about dogs that I would have never understood before. The Dog Whisperer is on the National Geographic Channel.

I have a german shepard too. The thing with these dogs is that if the owner does not take complete leadership the dog will end up being domminat over the owner. You need to work with him to show him that you are in charge regardless of the circumstance. When he starts to growl at you take your thumb and index finger and quickly push them to his neck (like how a dog might bite). Dont show any weakness to him just be firm and dont let him get away with anything you dont want him doing because it will just make him take advantage of you and not take you seriously.

NEVER try to take something from a dog's mouth unless your playing tug of war ...ball..ect. Don't take any form of something he can eat! Heat will make him grouchy a little. Give him lots of water and food. Keep him out of the sun. Have you had him since he was a pup? Because maybe he has a history of having to fend for himself ...you know. Please don't ever hit him..not even if it's not hard. This could make him aggressive! When you do that to a dog...they feel very threatened! If you keep hitting him..next time he could tear you up. I am sure this dog is your buddy...but always remember that any dog can bite if provoked!

I'd say he was being teritoriol with his pigs ear. He felt you were teasing him and when he got the pigs ear it was his.
You can't take anything back from a dog once he has it.
If you want to train him to do a trick use small pieces of dog bones and keep it cupped in your hand so he can smell it but not get it til he has done it right.
