Glossy paper tends to make colors look a little more intense (kind of a "wet" look), but also shows finger prints and reflects lights. Both matte and glossy look equally clear to me. But I get distracted by the reflections in glossy paper.

I prefer matte or satin, but have experimented with different papers to get good color intensity. I think that HP Premium Plus Matte works best with my HP Deskjet 722c printer. But it is hard to find in stock here. And it is pricey.

Kodak Ultima Satin is almost a dead match for the HP Premium Plus, and costs less, and is easy to find. I use that most of the time now.

HP's and Epson's newest inks (on their own papers) usually test very well on longevity tests. I have not seen a difference reported for matte vs glossy.

I have not seen any test results for prints done by a photo lab.

Good Luck

Paper texture is really a matter of personal preference. Try to stick to paper made by the same people who make your ink, as they design them to be compatible. Other combinations will work, but if it'sall in the details, matching brands works best.
