if you see your 2 year old trying to poke his little sisters face with a plastic knife (they are his drumsticks to play with), do you take it away, discipline and then give it back eventually, or do you take it away and never give it back. if never, what can we use for drumsticks that are his size?

The thing about taking it away for a short period of time and giving it back, he will want his drum stick back. I believe this is how we teach trust. You need to be persistent. Tell him the consequences when you give the drum stick back and stick to your guns. If you tell him the drum sticks will be put away the next time, then that is what you must do. Spatulas make good drum sticks.

Yes, I would take the knife away. You can go buy drumsticks that are just for kids. I got my son a set of them and he is also 2 years old. Beware of the drumsticks though, because my son tries to use my girls as his drums.

Take away. Never give it back. Try buying some from the store-Walmart has the $10 dollar ones, and it comes with a drum. Discipline is always good. Show them who's the boss. Don't beat them. Time outs work and take away and give him one more chance and then if that doesn't work take away and never give back.

To have given him knives in the first place was the mistake. Try using plastic ones from a toy drum set. I really don't see to much of a difference, your still giving him the option to poke her in the eye again no matter what you use. Maybe you shouldn't have them together when he plays with his drums.

Take it away because he may still try it again even after being told no. He is 2, after all!

Why do you need drumsticks?

Give him something that's not shaped so narrow and pointed. Find him some toys that he won't want to use as weapons!

How about using Popsicle sticks?

Of course, he can poke his sister with those or anything else. I would work on teaching him how to be gentle and kind to others. He will be picking on his sister for many more years! Two year olds have so many things to learn about life. Praise him for the things he gets right, and steer him away from things he gets wrong.

I wouldn't take them away forever, just long enough to make him learn his lesson. Because he is 2 he will probably be poking his sister in the face with whatever is in his hand. Good Luck

take them away and keep them only for use when eating.

my son loves using the cardboard leftover from paper towels. i give them directly to him and he drums on everybody and anything and so far, no annoyances. has a cool sound too.

Kids shouldn't play with knives, plastic or otherwise. Give him something a little less dangerous... maybe plastic straws or chinese chopsticks from your local chinese resturant.

Take the sticks away, you don't have to be a mom to realize this
