Pretty much until you cut it out or dye it out. You've seen women with roots before? This is why. It doesn't go away, that's why it's permanent. The color may start to look faded and drab with time, but it doesn't wash out. Stick with temporary colors if you are unsure. They wash out gradually so no one will notice the change as you hair grows out.

It should last for about 24-30 Shampoos, depending how often you wash your hair, and the type of shampoo/conditioner that you use. If you want to keep your color a little longer - try using the John Frieda Luminous Hair Glaze. It is like a colored gloss on your hair.

actually, you've unwittingly answered your own question (... permanant hair dye...)

it is permanent. when you use a level 3 product (such as Clairol Herbal Essence, for example) it is permanent, and will be there until you grow your hair and cut it, or until you dye another colour over it.
