The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* On the Journey to Open a New School: One Step at a Time by Brenda J. Travis
* Crash Course by Chris Whittle
* How to Market Your School : A guide to marketing, public relations, and communication for school administrators by Johanna M Lockhart
* A Public School of Your Own: Your Guide to Creating and Running a Charter School by Catherine Blakemore

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

Here's a great book to start with.... Developing and Administering a Child Care Center by Dorothy June Sciarra. It lists tons of info about starting a daycare (or being the director of one already going). You can also check out How to Start a Quality Childcare Business in Your Home by Melody Carlson. You can also use a business program called Business Plan Pro which will help you set up the business on you computer. There are also some great computer programs out there designed especially for childcares that can help you keep track of childrens' information, vaccinations, tuition, etc. You can find most legal forms for childcares (emergency cards, physician forms, pick-ups, allergies, etc.) on your state's Department of Education website (or you can just go to a local center running in your area and ask for a copy of the forms they use). Licensing (the agency the will license you to run a daycare) will also have all the forms and guidelines you will have to abide by in order to run a center or home daycare. Depending on your state, you may have to have a specific level of college before you can direct a center. Always make sure everything you have is legal, so get your paperwork checked out by a lawyer before you start. You don't want to lose a business you put your heart and soul into. Hope this helps!
