Contrary to what some people believe, emergency contraception pills do not cause an abortion. They prevent ovulation or fertilization, just like a birth control pill does.

Emergency contraception hormones prevent fertilization by stopping the ovary from releasing an egg (ovum). They also make the fallopian tubes less likely to move an egg toward the uterus. Emergency contraception is also thought to thin the lining of the uterus, or endometrium. The thickened endometrium is where a fertilized egg would normally implant and grow.

Emergency contraception

Examples

Medications
Progestin
levonorgestrel (Plan B)

Combination birth control pills
estrogen and progestin (Ogestrel, Ovral, Low-Ogestrel, Lo-Ovral, Levora, Levlen, Nordette, Triphasil, Tri-Levlen, Trivora, Alesse, Levlite, Aviane)

Note: Plan B is specifically packaged for emergency contraception.

Emergency contraception is used after unprotected sex to prevent a pregnancy from starting. It is most effective when it is used as soon as possible after intercourse. It is not necessary to take a pregnancy test before using emergency contraception.

Some of the other postings seem to be confusing Plan B with Methotrexate.

Methotrexate (MTX) for Early Abortion
Methotrexate (MTX) is a chemotherapy agent that has been used for many years in the treatment of cancer because it affects cells that are rapidly dividing. In a Methotrexate (MTX) Abortion, it stops embryonic cells from dividing and multiplying and is a non-surgical method of ending pregnancy in its early stages.Within a few days or weeks of receing an injection of Methotrexate (MTX) at the clinic the, the pregnancy ends through an experience similar to an early miscarriage

Methotrexate is a FDA approved drug, but is not labeled for use in the termination of pregnancy. It has been successfully used since 1982 in a single dose to treat ectopic (tubal) pregnancies (where the fertilized egg is embedded in the fallopian tube instead of the uterus).

Plan B works like other birth control pills to prevent pregnancy. Plan B acts primarily by stopping the release of an egg from the ovary (ovulation). It may prevent the union of sperm and egg (fertilization). If fertilization does occur, Plan B may prevent a fertilized egg from attaching to the womb (implantation). If a fertilized egg is implanted prior to taking Plan B, Plan B will not work.

If the egg and sperm have not met it prevents the two from meeting. If so, it keeps the two from attatching. I dont understand how people claim this is abortion? If so then is birth control abortive? Maybe I dont know enough about the subject but from my understanding it prevents conception. If the fertilized egg is already attatched then your pregnant and will have a baby.

You're right. I's abortive, not preventive. But to many people, it is preventive because you are not going to give birth and they feel that it is not a child until a month or so. The aftermorning pill is a really just a high dose of birth control. It may make you throw up.

The Morning After Pill releases a massive dose of birth control hormones into your system that causes (a) an unfertilized egg from being fertilized, or (b) a just fertilized egg from staying attached to your uterus lining. It sheds the lining, just like when you have your period.
