It is said to be his way of calling out all the Jivas (those attached to sensory objects) who are lost in the night of samsara. It is said that music captivates and attracts the senses of all beings. It also is used to generate sacred love, to cultivate devotion, to purify, and to illuminate.

"When Krishna plays the flute the whole world is filled with love. Rivers stop, stones are illumined, lotus flowers tremble; gazelles, cows and birds are entranced; demons and ascetics enchanted." (Bhagavata-Purana)
