How can I stop salesmen, Jehavoh Witnesses, charities from constantly banging on my door? I've tried to be nice about it. I've put up NO SOLICITING signs to no avail. Most of the people didn't even know what "no soliciting" means or that it can apply to them. Not going to the door is no deterent. Our neighborhood is being hit in wave after wave of these people.

Here is the plan.. and it has worked flawlessly with me for the last 5 years.

Step one... Always open the door with an aluminum foil hat on... When you open the door, do not acknowledge the person who rang the bell or knocked on the door, and instead look (suspiciously) around as if you are under surveilance.

Then pull them into your house... again ignoring them... act all confused and frustrated and then interrogate them as to how THEY found you... when the OTHERS are coming...

Step 2 the Aerosol Can... grab air freshener, and spray it wildly into the air, spray it at your visitor, spray it all over... Then whisper in their ear... that it is "safe for now"... As soon as the fog clears... Spray again...

Step 3 preach to them.. ask THEM if they've heard the good news, that aknard send his toenail to earth to seed the planet with life.... or some crazy nonsense... then tell them they have to leave out the back door, because you have to sharpen your knives, before the others come...

Just note, the police may arrive later... keep up the act for a free meal, courtesy of the local institution...

What u can do is call the number of what they are soliciting and complain that u have put no soliciting signs where they can see them that will spark their attention because if u were solicited then maybe the rest of the neighborhood got solicited so u might complain to the rest and that means less customers so im pretty sure thatll work.

I too live in a neighborhood who seems to be getting slammed lately. I wrote a sign that says No soliciting, No Politicians, Preaching, or Poll Takers! I don't want to buy anything from you or give my opinion, nor do I want to hear yours.
Thank You. After reading the answer above me, I guess I should add Defiantly No Shared Scriptures! Jehovah's are the worst. They won't leave you alone, and always throw some stupid book into your hands.

Jehovah's Witnesses are not solicitors in that they are not asking for anything from their neighbors. They hope merely to share an encouraging thought from the Scriptures.

The Witnesses will respect a clear request that the address be added to the "Do Not Visit" list for the area. They may follow up just once a year or so to see if you are still living at that address.

As an alternative or supplement, consider a "No Tresspassing" sign.

Change the way your sign is worded, No soliciting of any kind if you knock on my door, you are taking a risk of being, cursed at, dog bite, shot at, or arrested. Any of these are my choice not yours. NO SELLING, NO PREACHING, IF YOUR NOT MY PERSONAL FRIEND OR FAMILY GO AWAY.It does work I was having trouble too.

You could always answer the door in your underware holding a shotgun (just make sure you don't step outside)! Even better, put a beer can hat on (the kind that holds two beers with straws going to your mouth).

Put up a sign specifying who you do not want such as

No Salesmen
No Religious Groups
No Surveys
No Adverts
No Trick or Treats
No Carol Singers
No Unsolicited Callers
Please

Please do not call if you belong to one of these groups as I do not wish to waste your time and mine.

Get a peephole installed on your door. When you see people you don't know tell them to go away without opening the door.

Put up a sign or two: "Beware of Dog" "Attack Dog on Property, No Trespassing"

Then buy one of those digital dog bark players (little device that plays a dogs bark).

Word will spread quickly.

Either a "No Trespassing" sign or a Rottweiler on the front porch.
