If photography is what you love, then do it. If you could have any job in the world would this be it? Is photography your inner-passion? If so, then what's the issue. Do what you love and forget what others might say about your career choice.
I know some photographers who make a load of money because photography is their passion, they really enjoy the job, they have unique ideas for posing etc. and this shows in their pictures. They are booked for months in advance.
If you still are wondering after this, then why not contact a few photographers in your area and talk to them. Find out why they choose this profession, average earnings, what they like the most and what they dislike about their job.
The more information you have, the better informed you are and you can then make the best choice for you.

It's a start, being formally schooled can give you an advantage over someone who just takes pictures; however, photography is about art and skill, just because you are take a class doesn't make you a better photographer than someone else who is very talented.
Photography is a great business to be in for your self
