An alphanumeric character is any character on a keyboard.

Numeric characters are also part of that group, but numeric characters are used for calculations, etc.

A number that is alphanumeric is used when you don't need to make any calculations, such as a zip code or telephone number.

All the rest of the characters on the keyboard are characters only.

So "alphanumeric" refers to both the numbers not being used for calculation purposes, as well as the letters (alpha as in alphabet)

alphanumeric is not a character description, but a description of the type of data in a data base. It defines the storage area. In other words, if the data field (name for example) calls for alpha, then input can only be an alphabetic character. If you are looking at the address data field, then perhaps that area might be defined alphanumeric, signifying that either alpha or numeric characters are acceptable.

When something is "alphanumeric" it contains both numbers and letters. Most passwords require "alphanumeric characters" because they are much safer that way. For example: ABC123 is alphanumeric.

It is a combination of letters and numbers to create a "word." For example, on your tires, there is a string of letters and numbers that tell you all about that tire. A serial number on your computer/printer/electronic device is usually an alphanumeric character (ZD15T0YB3).
