Try something simple, if you go too big first time around, how are you going to top it in the future.
I believe all girls appreciate simple signs of affection.
Choose extraordinary, like an arrangement of wild flowers or a single yellow rose.

There is really nothing like a best gift here because people differ and as such are interested in different things. Again, where you come from matters as well as how much you are willing to spend. There are lots of things to choose from. A trip to a gift shop in your neighbourhood will give you lots of ideas - jewelry or jewelry kit, a lingerie, a piece of art work, clothing material esp something native, handbag, purse, shoes, wrist watch etc. the list is endless
Your choice therefore depends on what you know about your g/f and what you think she will like.

Flowers are always nice in my opinion, but something more unusual would be nice too. You could try to find out a little about what she enjoys, and get something small but thoughtful that reflects that.

Here is my favorite first-date-gift, although it probably wouldn't work for anyone else. One friend of mine (a woman) had a first date with a man who is a carpenter. He shows up for their first date and gives her a block of wood. They were married within the year. Probably wouldn't work for most women, but I think she found it simple, poetic, kind of zen. She said it was a very beautiful block of wood, and holding it she felt its strength.

Why gift on the first date it is like you are buying it. One thing is nice about being a straight woman is you can pretty much pick your man and get gifts. Also women tend to expect gifts which is funny it's like they are all prostitutes.

You don't need a gift for the first date! Just have tons of fun!

Maybe a very interesting book from an authour that both of you like. And draw some cartoon quips at the corner of each page...
So that every time she will turn the pages, she will be having fun looking at those tiny drawings.
Goodluck!

Since it's a first date, I'd suggest flowers.

Something simple and thoughtful. Maybe a small box of chocolates, coffee, or tea, a mix CD you make yourself, or a houseplant. If you know anything about her tastes, so much the better.
