We buy fresh fruit as often as possible. However, when I place them in the fridge, they lose their taste. I don't want to leave them on the counter because they could get old fast, but am afraid to put them into the fridge. Our fridge doesn't have a crisper. I have to put them on the shelf. Also, a lot of the fruit pretty much turns to ice even at the lowest setting on the fridge. How can I keep the fruit tasting wonderful without going bad or turning to ice?

You did not mention where you are living. Some fruits keep fresh just fine in a fruit bowl on the table. Others should be strored in a brown bag in the refrigerator. How long are you keeping them? I have to be careful of keeping fruit out, because I live on a boat in the summer, and we get fruit flies. Citrus fruit is good in a bowl. Grapes should be refrigerated. Apples vary on the variety. Peaches and plums keep in a bag. Berries in the frig. Do not refrigerate bananas it makes them brown faster. Check different areas in your frig. Near the back is colder.

Some fruits give off a gas that helps them ripen after they have been picked. If you store other fruits with or near them they will all ripen much quicker.
Apples produce a lot of this gas and it can cause bananas to ripen too quickly.
Store Bananas on a hanging banana stand or an open wicker basket so they can breathe
store apples in fridge
keep other summer fruit is breathable basket and (if you really want to keep them fresh) don't stack them on top of each other.

Well you can buy fruit thats not quite ripe yet if you don't plan to eat it for awhile, but really once the fruit is ripe it wont stay anywhere long unless you freeze it. Either buy it ripe and eat it within a day or two or buy it before it ripens and let it sit on your counter until it does. Then eat it.
