Both French and English are mandatory parts of the school curriculum here. Parents however do have the option to have their kids "opt out."
(This is generally only done with Special Needs, or learning disabled kids, though.)
We also have optional French Immersion Schools where the primary language is French for all subjects. In this case, parents elect to send their kids to these schools.

Yes, they do. In some provinces, English is the dominant language whereas in some French is so.
After all, they are required to learn only two languages. There are countries where children have to learn at least three languages - provincial (usually mother tongue), national and international. This is true in countries like India.

Yes. They now start in kindergarten. French is an independant subject though - all other classes (unless the child is in a French language school) are taught in English.

Start really early and take it up until the 1st year of high school. When I was in school we started in Grade 4 and had to take 1 year of it in highschool. I hear it might start even earlier than that now.
I'll tell ya one thing though. I would say that 95% of the people who took it still couln't put together a half *** sentence. Nobody really cares about it up here, except mybe the whiney french.

yes you do. in ontario (im not sure about other provinces) , there are differents sections of french. there is francophone schools, immersion programs, extended or enriched and then core french.
francophone is the same as a normal english school except its in french.
french immersion starts in senior kindergarten and continues all the way up until grade 12
core french starts in grade 3 or 4 (it depends), and it can be dropped after grade 9
and enriched or extended is in the middle of immersion and core

Only necessary in Quebec... but it is taught in every providence otherwise, they wouldn't be able to communicate with the rest of the country, or the world for that matter. (Except for France, french Guyana and certain sections of New Orleans of course)
