I am very glad that you are aware that family history could have a strong influence on your health, though it is not absolute. You are definitely at the perfect time to start taking care of your health.
Since you are still 16 and still growing, albeit at a slower rate, you need to be very careful not to lose weight very fast because this will definitely affect your development.
The first thing you should do is to increase you physical activity whenever possible. Try to make it a habit of exercising 1hr at least 5 days a week; this could include, walking, jogging, biking, aerobics, dancing, gardening, doing house chores....anything to keep you moving and sweating. Since you have a family hsitory of diabetes, it would be good to also include some resistance training i.e. weight lifting. This would not only help you ward off diabetes, but also it will help increase your metabolism for the long run.
In terms of diet, cosume lots of vegetables, vary them as well. Always try to start all your meals with a big salad, but beware fo the quantity of dressing you add to it. I recommend that no matter what size salad you are having, only add to it 1 Tablespoon of any dressing, olive-oil based dressing is the most healthy.
Fruits are also important, but you should eat them in moderation. I prefer that you eat fruits instead of drinking juice. Excessive juice drinking can lead to weight gain.
Choose lean meats such as chicken breast, turkey breast, lean beef, but make sure these are not fried , but either stewed, baked, steamed or boiled. Beans are a very healthy choice too.
Stick to non-fat or low fat dairy products. Drink milk every day, if you dont like milk, then you can have low-fat yogurt instead.
Stay away from all junk food (sweets, pastries, fast-food, fried foods, sodas, sweetened juices, ...etc) You can have some of this every once in a while but do not over do it.
Be careful with the amount of oil used to cook the food you eat try to use as little as possible.
If possible spread your meals, i.e have 3 main meals and 2 snacks in between. A snack could be a piece of fruit, a cup of low-fat yogurt, some vegetables, etc
Hope this helps!

Well, if this is infact overweight for your height... you should be worried. The way i lost 15 lbs and more, is i walked a mile everyday on my tredmill. I just watched what i ate, i ate lots of salads and such, and the weight melted like butter. Dont drink soda though it puts on lots of unessary weight because its high in sugar.
