Well I have had a double barrel surname all my life and in just over month I am getting married. I wish I could pass on half of it but also am looking forward to being able to fit my name and signature on forms and only having a short surname to spell to people! I have a hyphen and get annoyed if people don't use it because that is part of my name, some people don't have them though.

A lot of Spanish families tend to have double barrel surnames I came across one where four christian names were followed by de Delgado Torres Castillo Roberto
I should imagine depending on how long the name is that form filling can become a bit of a nightmare

I have debated this one for a long time. I divorced many years ago and my children have their fathers name. I considered changing it into my name initially but dismissed that because the children had their identity. Legally that would have posed problems too as I would have needed his permission. I then thought about double-barrelling their names so that they had both our names. I still haven't made my mind up.
If I did double barrel the name I would definately use the - as this shows its one name. Some names can easily be mistaken as a middle name as opposed to a last name i.e. Reece (a boys name but also used in Reece-Jones) Ultimately when the children are older they can choose which one they will use.
I will watch your question as I am interested to know what people think on this one.

It is up to you what you decide in the long run and then as they get older and grow up they can choose what they prefer whether it be a single surname, double barrel name or even double -barrel.
I know its different but I was registered as Kirsty Anne, no double barrel or anything and one of my family members calls me Kirsty-Anne and I absolutely hate it and I have been on and on to them for years to stop calling me this but they still do it (I am now 22) And I was never christened or registered like that and I don't like it.
I try to shorten my name as much as possible nowadays though because one it is easier and two it doesn't sound like a mouthful.
What you have to remember is that your children will have to live with what ever name you give them for the rest of their lives whether it is a double barrelled name or not, they will either love it or loathe it.
So you have to decide what is right for your children, rather than making it sound good or even look good on paper.

A lot of people do have reasoning behind double-barrel names. When i get married I'm going to have a triple barrel name. My reason for doing this........... my pertener has a double barrel name and i want all of his surname at the same time i want to keep my dads name as his only son, my brother, passed away at 3 months old so their is no-one to carry on our family name. my sister is already married and changed her name, my other uncle has no sons and both my aunts have already changed their names. so its down to me to carry on the surname for my dad.

I think they're unnecessary and, ok there's nothing wrong with them, but what if someone with a double-barrelled surname gets married and both ppl want to keep their name? Triple barrelled? Then what, will it ever end?

to be honest i actually think there a bit... welll .... Sh*te to be honest...
or maybe thats my experience of people with double-barrelled surnames...
Their either stuck up their own a** pompass women who refuse point blank "just" to be known as their new married name.
Or WORSE...
the ones that actually make it there mission to tell you why its double barrelled when you say hi can i speak to so-so...
God they drive me nuts!!!
Sorry only my opinion... ;-(

It is a personal preference. Personally, I say it is a mouth full. Make one the first and one the middle name.
