"Many people" are incorrect (as is often the case with 'common knowledge' or 'group think'). Men and women are distinctly different, physiologically and psychologically. Even taken as separate groups, vast differences are readily apparent.
The communal whining concerns equality of opportunity. Everyone should have the opportunity to do whatever they desire, but ability should be the deciding factor.
Regarding the conscription of women, all branches of the Armed Forces have duties women can fill, but again, ability should be the deciding factor. Front-line combat positions present unique risks, especially regarding capture, possibly leading to command decisions that would otherwise not come up with an all male combat force.
Having spent several years in the Marines, I got to go places and see and do things I would have spent my life dreaming about. The experience, while not always pleasant, was definitely worthwhile.

I am an Active Duty military personnel, and I think that women should have to register for the draft if they are eligible for military service. Needless to say, I do not believe they should serve in Combat Units because they would be a political and tactical liability. However, there are plenty of career fields in the Armed Service that women can qualify for and perform just as well as men.
For example, in the IDF(Israeli Defense Force) women are conscripted for 2 years of Military service. As you can see in current events the IDF is a force to be reckoned with, even with women in their conscript based Military force.
When all is said and done women have demanded equal treatment so we as Americans or whatever your nation of origin should oblige them those rights. All of the rights of equal citizenship not just the ones that are easy. If you asked women in the military if they should have to register for the draft you would find that most of them are in favor.
Thank You for your time.

What follows below is an answer to a question, that is similar to yours, that I posted in Yahoo Answers sometime ago.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In a truly equal world women should meet the same performance standards in order to be accorded the same respect as men are in various fields. The same goes for the military.
Unfortunately there is something called a double standard, and it permeates much of our society when we institute so called gender equality in the workplace or military. Until there is true equality in the military women should not be allowed to join it. If you go to Military.com and do a search on the basic physical fitness tests that both men and women have to go through, you will see that the standards, and in some cases the exercises, are different, where a man must achieve a higher number of pushups, sit-ups and quicker times in endurance events. Certain branches of the military, that require the use of pull-ups (chin-ups), to test upper body strength require women only have to perform the much easier flexed arm hang.
I grant that the inherit physiological difference between men and women preclude most women, with the exception of the genetically gifted, from matching the numbers that men produce on these tests. However, these standards are formulated for a reason! It has been devised, by those who know a thing or two about combat, that if a person can meet such and such standards, then he or she will perform optimally during a combat situation. To lower the bar just to accommodate the inherit shortcomings of a gender is not only another form of inequality, it also a waste of time, money and can endanger people’s lives.
Think about if these sort of concessions were made in other career paths where inherit traits can make the difference between someone getting a job or not. A truck driver requires good vision to drive. Suppose I was born blind. Would it be fair for me to demand that I get a trucker’s license under the banner of equality? Would you like to drive beside a visually impaired man who is driving an eighteen-wheeler? I am only 5 feet 6 inches tall. I like to play basketball. I can do nothing about my height because it is an inherited feature. Suppose I sued the NBA because they did not lower the performance standards so that I can be on par with other NBA players who are 6’5” and above.
The ultimate litmus test of whether a person should be hired for a job or not is their performance, not whether the test discriminates against those with inherited differences. Keep in mind there are inherited characteristics that women have both emotionally and physically that bar men from competing against them in other career paths. Do you see men whining about that? Society needs to get a grip and realize that people are different and certain people are not meant for certain things. Lets learn to use those differences to get the most out of people instead of manipulating our standards to try and make people appear the same.

Well having spent 5 yrs int he Army and currently married to a service member as well, there is something to be said about deploying both genders. Yes I feel women and men should deploy but I am not sure about drafting. I know its sexist to say it but what about the children left behind someone needs to maintain household and although cliche its usually the women. Personally I feel we should be like other countries and make it mandatory to serve at least 2 yrs in service.

I think women should have to right to vote/work etc. However from a Nature stand point they do things differently then males. It's impossible to say everything should be equal because it can't be.

Sorry as a girl, i believe women don't belong in combat at all, they can serve as finance, legal and other military jobs, but not combat.

you're acceptable. women folk want to be more effective cooperative with one yet another. in right now's society, women folk are pitted hostile to at least one yet another in each element. men do not have this stigma. they have a tendency to adhere at the same time more effective than women folk. i, for you likely can under no circumstances fathom the position this chop up between women folk handed off. we do no longer have believe between ourselves, and that i imagine that is the taking off to bonding.
