I need a radar detector that is effective against the radar that is used by State Patrol, etc. Any ideas or is it even possible anymore?

Ya its possible
1. You ought to know the frequency of the State Patrol Radar.
2. Device a jammer of the same frequency.
3. While you approach it just swt on the jammer and you will be able to avoid the State patrol Radar.

All the best

Radar jamming is definitely illegal. Pick up a couple car magazines or search online for radar detectors.

I don't know the current models, but a company called Cincinnati Microwave used to make police radar detectors and another company (name?) was competing well against them.

There are a few US states where radar detectors are illegal. Some detector units provide means to conceal them inside the car, so that if you do get pulled over, the cop can't see it.

One of the problems with detectors, is that some cops have fast instant-on radar. You must hit the brake pedal with moderate force within 1 to 1.5 seconds after he turns his radar on. When braking forcefully, the police radar won't read-out your speed.

You can beat instant-on radar, but you must be very alert to do so.

A search of the web will get you more radar detectors than you can imagine.

Wouldn't it be easier to slow down? Unless they are doing some sort of saturation patrol, police won't bother you if you are only 5 mph or so above the posted speed. They are usually after the serious speeders. If you are one of these, you need to slow down anyway.
