I haven't really dug into this issue yet, but I heard the other day that soy can be dangerous to the body because of the "phito-estrogens" (sp?). Needless to say, I figured I'd ask here.

So far everyone who answered is WRONG!!! Including the Science Teacher. Stay away from soy!!! The only soy that is safe to eat is the fermented soy like soy sauce or miso but only in small amounts.

Soy phytoestrogens disrupt endocrine function and have the potential to cause infertility and to promote breast cancer in adult women.

Soy phytoestrogens are potent antithyroid agents that cause hypothyroidism and may cause thyroid cancer. In infants, consumption of soy formula has been linked to autoimmune thyroid disease.

The bottom line is that all soybeans, including organic soybeans, contain naturally occurring antinutrients, toxins and phytoestrogens that have been linked to thyroid damage, reproductive problems, infertility, ADD/ADHD, cognitive decline and a host of other problems, including heart disease and cancer growth.

In the US we have dairy and meat industries with WAY too much money to burn. If someone has a lot of money they can pay to have any lie backed up by "science". People that use their own logic know that many people in Asia and the Asia-Pacific eat soy alongside meat or without on a regular basis and suffer none of the ill effects that many "studies" claim to be due to soy consumption. The US is one of the nations that consumed the most cow's milk and dairy products and also happens to have the highest rates of osteoporosis.

Soy is a good source of protein. Phyto estrogens are not bad. They are much better than hormone replacement therapy. Many women take soy protein as a supplement. Soy milk is okay. I prefer the lite vanilla. It isn't real milk but works in recipes and tastes like icecream when I drink it. Tofu is soy milk curd. Soy hotdogs and other meat replacements are good. In California the hamburgers at certain fast food chains have soy added. ( I used to work for them in quality control) Soy sauce is fermented soy. Soy sauce and soy products have been used in Asian countries for hundreds of years. They have better circulatory system health than we do. Much research has been done on soy recently , so now it tastes better. When I was in school it tasted awful. Soy yogurt is available, artificial bacon chips are soy. It is used as a filler in many manufactured foods.

Jillian Michaels said that it prohibits fat metabolism, so if you are watching your weight, it works against you, which I did witness myself. The phytoestrogen is good for women at some points in our lives, but we should limit and or monitor our intake. My doc husband won't touch the stuff! I think that's pretty funny. I always keep a little on standby....hey, maybe it led to the overdevelopment of my adolescent daughter... hmmm. I'm being totally serious. I'll ask her doctor.

Don;t worry about Hoopla reports.

This is bogus. Usually these studies are funded by another industry trying to discourage one product
