Actually, the explanation for the conflicts is found in the book of Genesis.
Abraham and Sara were promised a child by GOD that would be the seed of many nations.
They grew impatient waiting on GOD to give them this child, so Sara offered up her bond servant (Hagar) to Abraham to marry and this union produced a child.
Not the child that GOD promised to Abraham and Sara, but a child he said would be a great (large) nation and his hand would be against men and their hand would be against him. This child was named Ishmael and is the "father" of the Arab nation (Islam/Muslim)
The child born to Abraham and Sara was named Isaac, and it is Isaac and his seed that was to receive the promised land.
The conflict comes in because both the descendants of Isaac and Ishmael believe that they are the chosen ones and are fighting over this land that God gave.
It is very interesting reading, and I know you will enjoy reading about it.
