Basic cable broadcasts are analog and only around 425 interlaced lines maximum. To see a better picture, you would need either a HDTV signal, or a Satellite box. Cable companies claim to have digital boxes, but this is mostly marketing hype, because the channel are certainly not as high res as DVD, unless they are HDTV. If you are in a big city, you should be able to receive most HDTV channels with an indoor antenna. These channels will display at 480P, 720P and 1080i, all of which are equal to or better than DVD.

The new TV sets are compatible, but are best used with HD or a digital signals. Each cable company carries both analog & digital signals of every channel, and offers both (meaning every channel is brought down from a satellite in space, but only customers who subscribe to digital cable get the digital version of said channel). It has to be that way because the older TVs do not accept the digital feed, only the analog. Sounds to me like your friend does not have digital cable, which has an enhanced picture. The government has mandated that all channels, broadcast & cable (ESPN, MTV, TBN, etc.) convert to a digital signal within 2-3 years. At that time all analog versions of programming can be dropped. This does mean that the entire country may need to buy new TVs, but the gov't is considering a stipend for all citizens so that they can purchase a new digital TV. It's actually much more involved, but hopefully this gives you an idea. Bottom line..........your friend likely doesn't have digital cable.

Sure it is. Most of the cable and satellite services are now offering special packages where you can get broadcasts in HDTV, and if you want that you have to make sure your LCD or plasma TV is HDTV-ready or HDTV compatible. Otherwise you're stuck with the basic service, and you're right -- the picture just isn't as good as DVD.
