It is to cut away and shape my gums around my teeth, it is not being taken from the roof of my mouth.

Do you mean a tissue transplant due to receding gumline?
If that's what you mean, then yes, I did have that done not long ago.
The whole procedure sounded scary and painful before it was totally explained to me. But it went well and I wouldn't be afraid if I needed it done again!
Beforehand I took a tranquilizer to relax me, so that by the time I got to the oral surgeon's office I was kind of sleepy and very calm. I didn't really even feel the shots. When the tissue was taken from the roof of my mouth, I'd been told that afterwards it'd seem like a "pizza burn," but that wasn't even so bad.
I never felt anything, really...no shot, no cutting, no stitches. It was less stressful than a cavity being filled. Aftercare wasn't too difficult, either. I did forget once, though, about not bending down and a big torrent of blood rushed from the area. But, that was all.
Try not to obsess. If you have a competent oral surgeon and they explain what to expect and you do what you are told, then things should go well...good luck!

if he's using a blade then yes, it's gonna hurt like hell. if he's up with the times then he'll have a laser to do the gingivectomy and you might, i repeat might, be a touch sore. i'd change dentists if he isn't going to use a laser. it makes that much of a difference.

Very painful was my expierence. I was sore for a week. Just remember to rinse w/ warm water or warm salt water

YES ITS PAINFUL ...BUT WORTH THE RESULTS.....IF ITS JUST TRIMMING THE EXCESS ITS EASY TO HEAL....IF YOU ARE HAVING A REPOSITIONING FROM THE ROOF OF THE MOUTH AREA PATCH....TAKES A BIT LONGER AND SOMETIMES DOES NOT TAKE.....BEST OF LUCK....DENTISTRY IS AS INVASIVE AS A GYN VISIT....

don't worry wont hurt but you could be in bit of pain after take codeine and paracetamol after
