I think the box should be open because in all honestly I wasn't paying attention to my FI and it took me to notice that he had a ring in the box- to realize he was proposing. ( I guess I should mention we were looking at a lake) When he took it out of his pocket, I thought it was a gift- but I had no clue it was a ring.

No, nix the ring entirely until AFTER she has said yes. First, she may say no, and even if she says yes (you hope), SHE should have the opportunity to choose her own ring (within your budget). Why should she be stuck with a ring she doesn't care for! Ask, then go ring shopping together.

I have never seen anyone ask while tha box is still closed so I dont know. When my husband asked ut was open. I guess I prefer it this way more traditional i think.
