Summary punishment is, indeed, immediate punishment, but not necessarily outside of the legal process. Check the links below, which show how summary punishment can happen within the courtroom -- as in the case of someone being immediately sentenced to jail for being in contempt, since the judge saw the situation happening. Or the process of military summary punishment, which while omitting a trial, does have requisite procedures in place. Also, there is summary justice and summary judgment, which are slightly different concepts. Hope this helps.

Corporal punishment is pain deliberately inflicted on a person to punish them for wrong-doing or to change their behaviour. This ranges from slapping a toddler's hand to spanking; strapping, paddling or caning in schools; to flogging, whipping, lashing. Spanking of children at home is still widely approved by parents in the United States, but in recent years it has been banned in some states and in many countries. Corporal punishment in schools has been widely banned in recent years, and legalized corporal punishment of lawbreakers has been banned in most Western nations over the past twenty-five years.
