Well speaking as an outsider, the distinction between fact and fiction would be a really helpful one to keep in mind. Thanks.

That we as Christians today live under the New Testament. The Old Testament was done away with at the death of Christ on the cross. God established a new Covenant, a set of law, for his followers of today and beginnning with the first century church to abide by. The Old Testament is a blue print to the New Testament. But the New Testament is what we will be judge under and what we must obey.

The bible was compiled by imperfect humans and must therefore be read with an effort to understand the deeper meaning because it becomes ludicrous if we take the whole thing at face value.

Ask the Holy Spirit to guide you to the correct interpretation of the Scriptures. Quit making assumptions that our religious leaders are our answer. That God the Father is Spirit and not flesh.

Everything that you personally want to do and are comfortable with: God's immutable law.
Everything that seems a little odd to you: metaphorical and/or 'the old law' that Jesus changed.
It's easy really.
