I am from bali, it is a decent Island with tropical weather, similar to Hawaii with exremely cheaper cost for everything you want to do from diving to shopping.
Bali has their own Autonomy in goverment and Hindu's religion so you will not feeling any racial slur or thread as a tourist.

Bali is part of Indonesia, it's about an 45 minutes from java island. they have international airport. People usually go to kuta beach. but i suggest you also go to nusa dua, you can go parasailing, banana boat, jetskiing, and lots of other activities there. you can also check out tanah lot, ubud, sangeh (if you like monkey, this place is full of them, and they're very friendly but sometimes naughty), jimbaran (very famous for the food, but i think they only open at night)
