Here's what I'd do....
I'd call the local animal control and explain the situation. Tell them that you'd like to keep the dog but you're afraid of this guy all of a sudden showing up 3 months from now and demanding the dog back (and yes, people do this). Go through an official process with animal control to file a report about a lost dog and then officially "adopt" the dog from them. Just make sure that they understand that you definately want to keep the dog so that they don't put the dog up for adoption to someone else or euthanize it. They will probably have to keep the dog at their facility for a few days for legal reasons, then have them call you when the dog has been officially declared homeless, then you can go adopt.
Animal control are the only people who can legally take a dog and give it to someone else. There are procedures they follow that allow a certain number of days to pass to find the original owner and then after that all ownership of the dog is declared void. If you do the same thing, you're just dog-napping even if the guy isn't emailing you back.
People are nuts. I'd be very afraid that this guy would show up months from now all of a sudden claiming that I'd stolen his dog and trying to sue me. If you go through animal control, he won't be able to do this.

Is there not a phone number to call? I would try every avenue to get the dog back to the rightful owner. If you where in the other persons shoes you would want your pet back, right???
Sounds like you actually want to keep the dog?????
You could always tell him if he does not reply in a timely fashion the animal will be going to a shelter.
One last note edited:
Many people do not realize animals have micro-chipps implanted in there necks. Take the dog to any Vet or shelter, they can scan the dog to see if it has a chip and contact the rightful owner that way. Many animals lose there collars with there tags and people do not think about the micro-chip and its effectiveness.

u will probably have to look at the ads. if there seems to be a lot of work into them he might b having trouble contacting u. also if he wasnt missing forto long bring him to the vet and u might be able to tell if this guy was really taking care of this pup. also try contacting him in a way other than email. who knows how many other emails he has! oh and wht about that whole problem with your mom and dogs. says that is still open.by the way you seem to b someone with a love for dogs your heart will tell u if this suposed owner is to and really wants his dog back

Make sure that you have contacted the following:
1) Local police and animal shelter
2) Local veterinarians
3) Local beagle rescue group (http://www.petfinder.com and click "Shelters and Rescue Groups" in the upper right)
Let them know when and where you found the beagle, in case someone has contacted THEM looking for her.
If you don't hear from someone in, say, two weeks, I would think that it would be safe to say she's not being looked for and you can keep her.
If by "the guy who lost his dog" you mean the guy who posted on here - I will bet you just about anything that he was just being a d*ck and it's not his dog. I doubt he even lives in Michigan.

I would keep a record of the e-mails I had sent him just in case somewhere down the line he tries to accuse you of not giving him his dog back.

You should also notify the local Humane Society and animal shelter. The local one says that you can keep the animal if the owners haven't come forward in 7 days.

If he is aware that you have his dog and avoids any further contact with you, then yes.
But give him a few days, he might have had his computer crash or had to go out of town or something.

is thier any other way you can contact him? If the dog has its tags you can try contacting the vet. but if you have no luck after a while its better for the dog to have a good home if he found one.
