The science and technology of metals and alloys. Process metallurgy is concerned with the extraction of metals from their ores and with refining of metals; physical metallurgy, with the physical and mechanical properties of metals as affected by composition, processing, and environmental conditions; and mechanical metallurgy, with the response of metals to applied forces.

Metallurgy is the study of, and application of metals in science and engineering.

It is split into two major categories:

1. Extractive metallurgy, dealing with the recovery and refining of metals from basic ore materials, wastes, or recyclables. These days, it frequently crosses over into recycling technologies and waste treatment. Extractive metallurgy further divides into pyrometallurgy, hydrometallurgy, electrometallurgy, and mineral processing.

2. Physical metallurgy, dealing with the application of metals and metal alloys in engineered products. The major fields within physical metallurgy are casting, hot forging, and cold forging. The field also plays an important role in the broader field of materials science.

I've worked as a metallurgist in both of the major fields. First as a pyrometallurgist (copper smelting), and now in hot forging (aerospace).

The science or procedures of extracting metals from their ores, or purifying metals and of casting useful items form the metals. It involves knowledge and study of metals and their phases and properties at bulk and atomic levels.
that's the technical definition hope it helps
