There are many things you can do.
Ram is the most obvious one. A gig would be about all your system might need since most of the work would be running on the video.
Other notions:
Do you use a separate sound card? A SB Audigy Value sound card can be yours for just 30 bucks at Fry's. This will take the load off the motherboard/CPU and shunt the processing to the card, where it should be.
Check your PageFile. No matter how much ram, your system will still dump into a pagefile. Optimal setting sare 1.5*Ram Amount for Min and 2-2.5*Ram Amount for Max. Regardless of size, the best thing you could do is put it on an alternate drive. Primary Channel. This will help all your computing needs. A spare 10-20G drive can be handy.
If you are using Windows XP Pro, I would suggest setting up a gaming profile that has all the bells and whistles turned off and the OS tweaked for performance. >Turn off all the niceities on your desktop themes and such<
Go into your Task Manager and kill all useless processes.
If you are running virus detection, disable realtime checking while you are playing. Or, if you feel secure in what you're doing, disable checking files associated with your game.
If you haven't in a couple of months, run a defrag just to be sure.
If you haven't in a couple of months, run a scan on your system drive. (Ususally requires reboot)
If you haven't in 6 months, format your hard drive and reinstall your system. (If you are hardcore, you actually have an optimized image of your system...fully tweaked/patched and ready to go, burned ala Ghost) It takes you less than 30 minutes to load a pure system, apply patches and be ready to run to your heart's contentment.
