I bought a portable dvd player with icons for... play back, pause,on, off, record, etc, etc. I've had this thing over a year now and still cannot (fully) get used to where or what these icons mean. Further......why dont they print WORDS on these machines so you can see them in half light from a distance. I am not blind by any means, but I do wear glasses and the whole thing is infuriatingly FRUSTRATING having to go to the instruction book. Please dont tell me it's because there is no room to put them, or most of the icons are well known, or its 'just cool'....that's nonsense!

Usually it's so they can just create one set of buttons or images and still sell the product in multiple countries. It's one way of saving money on manufacturing because only one or two models have to be produced. They don't have to spend money developing the product in different languages (think translations and all the fun with that).

It's like the drive through ATM's with braille. They just create one default style that fits every need imaginable so they save money on manufacturing costs.

So the same box can be used all over the world without having the same thing printed in 100s of languages.

i can only be blunt. In early gadget history these things were big, bulk and complicated. Parents had to ask their kids how to work them. Nowadays products have been dumbed down, and if you are struggling with basic symbols in this day and age you should really sue your local education authority for total neglect.

So they can be sold in any country with any language. That's why your instructions also come in several languages. It is one set of packaging throughout the world.

So one case can be sold everywhere.

If it was words they would have to have different cases.....

But I agree I don't like icons either.
