"No, I don't know that atheists should be considered as citizens, nor should they be considered patriots. This is one nation under God."

--George Herbert Walker Bush, Former U. S. President, 1988.

Does his son believe this too? Maybe all the good Atheists Americans should move to Canada where they will be welcome?

Isn't it ironic he helped his drug addicted, alcoholic draft dodging son avoid active duty while atheists were serving in Vietnam?

The hypocrisy of the entire Bush family is understandable; what is not understandable is why anyone would support them. Other than their fellow hypocrites, that is.

OK, I know I've said this about a thousand times on here, but it works for so many answers: Separation of Church & State.

This is supposed to be a free country, where we are allowed to worship (or not worship) as we please. Therefore the government cannot be based on just one particular religion.

Are spiritual theists who don't identify with any organized religion allowed to stay here, or do I have to go to Canada, too?? :)

As George H.W. Bush is irrelevant now, we can look past his bigotry and move to what matters - the current 'leader of the free world'.

It's difficult to be sure. Here are some GWB quotes from www.positiveatheism.com -

"Neither death nor life nor angels nor principalities, nor powers nor things present nor things to come nor height nor depth can separate us from God's love." (us refers to the American People)

"By teaching the word of God, you prepare your students to follow a path of virtue."

"Tyrants and dictators will accept no other gods before them. They require disobedience to the First Commandment. They seek absolute control and are threatened by faith in God. They fear only the power they cannot possess -- the power of truth. So they resent the living example of the devout, especially the devotion of a unique people chosen by God."

"It is fitting that we have a National Prayer Breakfast. It is the right thing to do, because this is a nation of prayer."

"Faith crosses every border and touches every heart in every nation."

"I ask Americans to bow our heads in humility before our Heavenly Father, a God who calls us not to judge our neighbors, but to love them, to ask His guidance upon our nation and its leaders in every level of government."

"After all, religion has been around a lot longer than Darwinism."

"Our priorities is our faith."

"Do I think faith will be an important part of being a good president? Yes, I do."

"I've heard the call. I believe God wants me to run for president."

BUT

"I'm mindful in a free society that people can worship if they want to or not. You're equally an American if you choose to worship an almighty and if you choose not to."

"We know that men and women can be good without faith. We know that."

"Americans practice different faiths in churches, synagogues, mosques and temples. And many good people practice no faith at all."

It's difficult to be sure. Probably it only means that GWB has more mindful spin doctors (as of late) than his father did. Still, it's better than nothing...

So, when they talk about "freedom of religion", they're just talking out their a** ?

Freedom of religion not only means the freedom to worship whatever god you believe in, but also the freedom to not worship anything, if that is your desire, or maybe the US is only free, as long as you do what you're told?

There are people out there that worship everything frmo a single god, to multiple gods, to objects, to the sun, and also to nothing at all. Who's to say who is right, and who is wrong?

President Bush (Jr.) has stated that he doesn't agree with this statement by his father, yet he has also shown hostility to faiths and lifestances other than his own.

Still, there's no reason why anyone should leave the United States because of their religious views or lifestance. We have the clearly stated views of the founders on our side.

I'm not going anywhere... the freedom of religion includes non-religion. And our government is supposed to be free FROM religion (separation of church and state).

Anyone who says such things is speaking against the Constitution of this nation and is absolutely not a patriot.

Well unfortunately most are getting there and soon you will have to change your motto from In God we trust to some thing realistic !

America was built by your forefathers as a free nation - Thanks to them, the world it self is enjoying a lot of freedom from religious harassment ! There will be more freedom once the concept of god is eleminated from America !

It's always interesting to see what an unguarded moment reveals about the true nature of political leaders, underneath all the carefully crafted showmanship.
