I have never heard of a national insurance number. Is that the name of a company? If so you could probably call and talk to a manager and tell him your situation. He will not be able to give you any information, but you could leave your number with them and have them contact your relative to get in touch with you. Another option, if you know their full name and state they live in do a people search on Yahoo. I have found almost everyone on there.

HMRC can find an address for your relative from the NI number, but they're not allowed to give it to you due to the data protection act. I'm afraid the NI number isn't going to help you much unless the answer above works.

If you write to Social Security (I think it's them), they would pass it on. I received a letter through them from an old work place. Social Security wrote a covering letter telling me they didn't know what the enclosed envelope contained - so you might be able to do it this way. Try phoning your local SS and see what they say.

You are so fortunate to have that number because it stays with that person for life.

Good luck

Go to a private detective agency. (Tracing agents). They will cost about £100 but will find your relative.
Look for these agencies in the yellow pages. There are far more than you think!

write NI number on large sheet of paper. Roll paper into a sort of cone-type shape. Insert small glass lense in one end of cone, large glass lense in the other end. e voila, you now have a telescope, should help with the search Please let me know how you get on!

Unless you're the police or work for the N.I dept then you won't find them via N.I number.

Data Protection and all that jazz.
