I notice this a lot, especially on the religion board. Someone asks a question like, 'Atheists: Why don't you believe in God?"--a perfectly legitimate, open-ended question. However, it usually boils down to the asker picking someone who agrees with them. "They're all going to Hell!" or the like.
If you're going to ask a question like that, wouldn't it make sense to pick an answer that...you know...answers the question? You may not like what they think, but if you get the information you want, doesn't that take precedent(did I use that word right?)?

Oh, and if I've done this myself, please forgive me. I'm just asking this because I've observed it a lot, and I have too much time on my hands :)

To head any criticism off at the pass: I know it's their right to pick who they want, but it seems a little counter-productive.

I typically pick answers that correctly answer the question asked and do not use cut & paste or excessive verbiage to do so.
I also look at a person's level and rarely give points to level 5 or above because we don't need the points.
But, sometimes, I just give points to someone because they amuse me with their answer. "Miraclewhip" being one that comes to mind. She didn't answer the question asked and ranted far beyond my usual limit, but what the heck, she made me *smile* when I read her non-answer.
And, I'll give points to "Edsawyer" if he answers and I don't like any of the other answers. He & I seem to think along similar lines based on his answers to other questions.

A lot of people aren't really looking for answers; they are looking to have their opinions reinforced. I'm just happy if the asker picks a best answer at all.

And don't forget those who ask a question with an account, then who answer this same question with another account they have.
And guess who will be chosen as best answerer? lol
Just for getting points... 2 + 10 per answer...

I'm assuming that alot of the people that give half *** answers are teenagers and they either don't have the intellect to answer the question,or they are lazy and just give the quickest one they can.

This is the answer I got when I asked this question:
Working on the basis of your question, you best answer will be one that agrees with you.
But if you are pointing it out because you disagree with this practice then your best answer will be one that disagrees with you.
But then you would be condoning the very practice you disagree with.

I agree with your assessment ... while I do not know if there is a way to change the situation, it's not the most productive, is it? If all we're here for it to yell and cheerlead ... where does it get us?

Most answers are crap. If you can't find one that makes you think or gives you new information, you might as well just pick "me too".
