I have lived in both San Francisco and LA, and personally i prefer LA. SF gay scene is over rated. West Hollywood is the most obvious LA gay area, Hillcrest in San Diego is great. It is very expensive in Weho you can live outlying areas, Los Feliz, Silverlake etc.

San Diego a much better bet - nicer place than LA, more manageable and historically a much stronger soccer scene. Try Pacific Beach as a pleasant area to stay. Hillcrest as previous answer is also nice.

Go for San Diego-it is a beautiful area.
For peace and tranquility try Bass Lake

santa monica, west hollywood, and west long beach have really active gay scenes and are relatively nice places to live in l.a. county. san diego, which i saw mentioned here a few times, is a lot more conservative than los angeles... so be aware of having to deal with that if you choose to go there

Santa Monica. There's a large group of Brits there already.
