Unfortunately, gas is a comodity, which means that its is necessary for most activities. What is more likely to happen is that the average person will stop being able to afford more normal things and will have to start making the choice - gas or food. This is already starting to happen, and BP is only trying to help push it along....
Just yesterday I discovered that my car has as bad as a pack and a half a day habit (I almost never look at cigarette prices, but just happened to yesterday).

American cities with their lack of decent public transportation require the use of autos. No matter how expensive gas gets, anyone who can afford it will have no choice but to buy it because there is no other way to get around, unlike in Europe and much of Asia.

I believe that unless gas becomes 10$+ ... people will still be buying it.. might be more car pooling.. but people will always buy gas.. and even if it's really expensive.. I still believe people will continue buying gas... at any cost
