Recycle. Carpool. Ride your bike instead of driving. Purchase food from responsible companies (aka, Organic Valley not Horizon, etc). Boycott the bad guys (meat from factory farms, Wal-Mart, ExxonMobil, etc). Plant native plants in your yard (offering habitat to native animals). Turn off the lights or water when you're not using it, volunteer with your local watershed council (participating on bug hunts, toad counts or invasive species removal) and also VOTE. Heck, campaign for your top candidates. Politicians make laws (laws concerning clean air, habitat protection, etc). And we decide which politicians get elected. Kudos to you for working to make the world a better place. Email me if you'd like to discuss the issue further :o) Rock on!

It is fairly expensive and difficult to minimize or eliminate your own carbon foot print. I am specifically talking about greenhouse gas emissions.
If you want to offset your own personal production of CO2 you can buy a Prius, cut down on waste, not fly on airplanes and get solar panels for your home. All this is extremely costly.
You should do all you can and then go out and buy CO2 credits. These credits are used to pay for elimination of greenhouse gases to offset your personal CO2 output (probably 20 tons per year). These credits cost about $5-10 per ton and can be purchased through a bunch a different web sites. This is an effective and relatively inexpensive way to become "carbon neutral".

One thing we can do is buy electric mulching mowers. These have potential to greatly reduce the amount of yardwaste going into landfills. The machines do not pollute the air, nor do they make very much noise. In addition, they reduce or eliminate the need for fertilizers (which ultimately cause water pollution -- including huge dead zones in our coastal waters). They even slow evapotranspiration by blanketing the soil with a layer of mulch -- which reduces the need for watering.

The best thing we can do and the hardest habit to change is the rate at which we consume resources and create waste. Hydrogen-powered cars, recycling, and solar power will only lead us so far, The strongest part of our conservation relies on our weakest point, our habit to consume more than we need
