The local bars won't hire me without a following and with my one man band it's hard to find a place to play. Is this an abuse of My Space using it in this way? Would you be irritated if you recieved a freindly invitation to hear my music. I do want to make friends with these people as well.

Definitely go for it. Make sure to make your music available for other people to add to their myspace pages, so that they will have it when their other friends check out the page. It's instant networking! And I've had a bunch of random artists message me to get me to check out their music, and especially if they write a personal note, I generally will check out their music. Check out your friends friends and see if they might be interested in your music, and then send them a nice message. It works, and it's a GREAT way to network. And then pass out flyers at local places with your myspace page on it, and you can build a real community. Good luck, and if you do this don't forget to post your myspace page on this page so we can all check out your music! :)

I would reach as many people as you can on My Space. Plus under the music link see if you can link up with agents in the business. And also network. That's what I would do for my band.

no it's completly fine...i always get random friend requests from people that are in bands...generally i've never even visited their sites or anything, but they probably found me on a mainstream band that i added...and simply added me because of the similar music style, figuring that i would like their style too.

and i've gotten weird bands too

but hell..it's all good. i think everyone just wants to get as many friends as possible...so they'll add you no matter what.
