It really depends on your hair type. If your hair is stick straight and oily, washing daily is essential. If your hair is curly or kinky, the natural oil doesn't work it's way down the hair strands as well as it can in straighter hair, so it's a bit dry to start with. To add insult to injury, the sulfates in shampoos strip what little oil/moisture these hair types have. If you're curly and wash daily, your hair may tend to look frizzed out.
In the book "Curly Girl", author Lorraine Massey recommends doing what she calls a conditioner wash. Instead of using normal shampoo, she recommends using conditioner, as it has enough cleaning agents in it to get your scalp & hair clean without stripping your hair dry. I was very skeptical about this, because my hair is kinky curly, but since I have been "no-pooing", my hair has never looked and felt better. In fact, when I was down to my last couple drops of Suave conditioner, I put some water in the bottle to get it all out, and it sudsed up, similar to shampoo! So there are cleaning agents in conditioner. I will occasionally mix shampoo & conditioner if I've used a lot of product in my hair, but overall the conditioner washes have made a world of difference. I recommend that all people with curly/kinky/wiry/nappy hair buy the book.

shampoo less often. shampoo does not only strip away dirt off our hairs,it also washes out the natural oils.but of course,it doesnt mean you should never have a good lather.do so at least three to four times a week because gentle shampooing stimulates the oils glands.use a mild shampoo, one that is labelled"for dry or damaged hair" and try not to put any tension on the shafts.use your fingertips in lathering.use a regular mayonnaise as an excellent moisturizer for dry hair.

Both can dry your hair. It dries your hair because when you wash your hair, the combination of hot water and shampoo to take the dirt out of your hair can dry it out if it is used every day. This is because it is not only taking the dirt out of your hair, but stripping natural oils from it. Three or Four times a week would probably be the best way to give your hair a break, but if you are worried about it just make sure to deep condition on the weekends and lay off the flat irons.

Well, this question depends on your type of hair, the type of shampoo you use, and the type of water that runs through your home. Hard water tends to dry out hair and skin. Harsh shampoos, like clarifying shampoos, shouldn't be used on a daily basis. Using only conditioner would help to keep your hair soft, but not clean. If you wash your hair daily, try using a quality shampoo, like Biolage or Paul Mitchell or use a good shampoo plus conditioner (Aussie and Fructise (? it's a green bottle)) are good for every day use.

shampooing your hair every single day can dry it out because you are stripping the natural oils from your scalp. the oils help keep the hair from being dry.
try shampoo every other shower, conditioner every shower.
water can be a factor, but not a very big one unless you're rinsing your hair in salt water or pool water every time you bathe. and yeah, who does that anyway? lol.
on the other hand, if your scalp is extra oily, shampooing every day should not be a problem. but most people have normal to dry hair. so shampoo every other day or less if you can.

The water can a little, especially if it is hot. The chemicals in the shampoo does for certain. Wash only every few days if you are having a problem, and like you already said, condition every day.

It absolutely dries your hair - and skin - out.
It's both the water and the shampoo, and conditioner is not as effective as the natural oils in your hair.
My wife goes to a fairly high-end salon, I asked one of the guys there with long thick curly hair how often he shampood his hair, and he said once per week.

I wash my hair everyday and it looks great and isn't dried out.
But some people do get dried out hair and it's from their shampoo. It's best to rotate through different kinds of shampoo
every now and then.
