Microwaves themselves do not make anything harmful or radioactive or anything like that. If you have heard otherwise, they are just rumours and untruths from the very early days of microwave ovens. Microwaves simply generate heat in the substances exposed to them and that is ALL they do.

Microwaves leaking from an old, badly sealed appliance can be dangerous, of course, because they are high-energy radiation which would cook you if you were too close!

What is more likely to be harmful are any preservatives and additives in the microwaveable meals or the (small) chance of bacteria growing in heated food which is not eaten straight away but is stored and reheated. Also, you are probably eating way too much salt and sugar.

Just to clarify a couple of points:
1 There is no radiation used in microwaving, just microwaves, which are not radioactive.
2.There is no UV light involved with microwaving either.
The reason for leaving food a few minutes before eating is because it can be very hot (easily hot enough to burn) after being cooked.

My understanding is that the foods themselves don't cause damage. There are a couple of things I learned about microwaves recently. 1. You should allow at elast one to five minutes for food to cool after cooking. This has something to do with the possibilty of radaition still being active. 2. You should never nuke pastic. The chemicals in plastic can enter the food. I'm not sure what the skinny for all plastics is. I know I havea damaged rubbermaid bowl from cheese being nuked in it.

It's an even trade. The amount of time you would spend using a conventional oven cancels out the amount of time lost due to health issues caused by your microwave foods. So, would you rather spend a long, boring life in front of the stove & oven or a happy life eating faster and having more time for video games? It's up to you!!

ahh..yes.. if you're eating foods that are microwave heaten, tendency is that UV rays stuck at your food you are going to eat.. I recommend not to heat using these microwaves, but using the old-style of heating. By using your stove and pans..or by oven..the natural heater..if you have one..from the oldies..

some of the effects of uv rays:

Melanoma
Certain cancers

u'll be fine.microwaving just cooks foods from the inside out, heat cooks food from outside in.its all a matter of changing the molecular structure of foods using an outside source. of course,if all u ever eat are processed,pre-packaged foods,u r getting way too much salt, not enough fruits and veg,and not enough fibre.now,THAT will get ya !!!!!

If it exploded I suppose it could inflict damage on you. Watch out for exploding hot dogs!

There's no evidence that they cause unwanted effects.
