Wow..that's a tuffy. I'm a fully convicted christian who loves Jesus and yet, while I have felt the Spirit of God comfort me and give me peace, I have even felt the overwhelming surge of energy and "aliveness"..I have never been overtaken as I've seen some during a worship service. As much as I believe in God..and that is alot..I do have many doubts in my fellow humans and I'm wondering sometimes...how much is that for real and how much is that, I dunno...its hard to articulate my doubt. I've never seen any evidence in scripture for that kind of behavior and while the laying on of hands is spoken of for healing and delivering of evil spirits the terminology "slain in the spirit" isn't in scripture..nor is there any evidence written regarding convulsions, falling over, fainting, being popped in the head by a ministering hand, and all the other. I did feel some sort of strange electrical charge and rush of emotion at a concert once..christian concert where I felt so overcome with Joy I was pretty sure I could have flown at that moment but aside from leaving me feeling somewhat tired and jittery (had a bad case of sleep deprivation giggles)..I've never felt what you describe either and to be honest..I'm real skeptical and if its typically the same ones over and over again...and they only do it in church but not in the check out stand at the grocery store..(in my mind the Holy Spirit can convict anywhere at any time) then something seems to be up. However, could be wrong. Love in Christ, ~J~ <><

SOmetimes it is because a person believes "that's what you are supposed to do." At least that is what happened with me at a Crusade many years ago. Other people just collapse under the power of The Holy Spirit. At our church, it was enough to point to someone across the room (who could be looking in another direction) and quietly say "receive the Holy Spirit" for them to collapse. It became something of a "game". Shaking, laughing and crying are common when a person is annointed in The Holy Spirit.

Dont know about the falling down bit but it all depends on the kind of church you are in... Some people believe that the Holy Ghost fills you - you shake (I have experienced this before though) Depends on the 'strongness' of the church and the people praying?
It's all good and you shouldn't be scared though!

I don't believe it. I think they close their eyes, and they see themselves falling over, which is really easy to do if your standing with your eyes closed. Some might do it because they don't want to get embarassed like there less spiritual.
First off why would God want you to fall down to the ground and get hurt. I know there somebody behind you but still. Second off if its true, why do you have to go to someone for this special power, I can sit in my room for a month asking for this gift, and it won't come.
I would say some people are deceived into believing they have it, or are to ashamed to admit they didn't receive from God. They say that you get the gift of healing and speaking in tongues. I don't see why it makes any sense to speak in a foreign tongue to somebody that speaks the same language as you. Besides if its talking to God, why would he need to hear some special language to get close to him.
Then there the gift of healing. Okay I do believe healing is possible, but more so from the individual getting to a place were he believes he can be healed, rather than a special person, going up and telling the sickness to leave your body. If they had this kinda of authority there shouldn't be any minister wearing glasses. They shouldn't have a guy in a wheel chair in the entire congregation. Seriously if I had that gift I would running to the hospitals healing every person I could.
I have gone to a church just like it for my entire life. I still remember one day at church this charismatic, happy go lucky guy came up to the pulpit to preach. This guy had a holy laughter, and was really annoying to me. He boasted that through prayer he was able to come to a state where he was always so happy, and never upset. He claimed that if you came up for a touch from God, you would be delivered. I just wanted to go up and punch him in the face in front of everyone just to prove that he was a phony. The sad part is it seemed everyone was buying everything he said. I'm not trying to say you can't be joyful at all times, but this guy was ridiculous.

It's a bunch of hooey.
I was at a service one time where this one lady was prayed for, did the shake, and fell out overwhelmed with the holy spirit. However, right after she fell, she was lucid enough to realize that her dress didn't fall quite right exposing a part of her that shouldn't be exposed. She quickly made the adjustment and continued to lay there until she came back to earthly conscience.

God moves mysteriously, but so do people. Some people will actually persuade themselves that the Holy Spirit is causing them to shake, when they are actually causing themselves to shake.
Prior to modern times, I don't recall hearing or reading of shaking in the Bible. When God or Jesus performed a miracle, it was just that without tongues, shaking, or anything else.

1st Corinthians... all about the spiritual gifts...
Something to remember - there is a time & place for everything... some of the spiritual gifts aren't to be displayed & practiced around people who don't understand. You have to fully understand through study & prayer before you decide what is right & wrong with the use of the gifts. Sometimes it is completely wrong w/ churches who use this practice at all times during their services... like I said - follow up by asking questions & bible studies, God knows our faith - strong or weak - and He knows our hearts... He will guide you to understanding.

do what you feel God is calling you to do. If God tells you to kneel, kneel. If you want to worship God by shaking or falling down, then do it. If you just want to sing to Him, do it.
The reason it only happens with some Christians is because most christians are too afraid to worship out of the box ;)

It's their way of "completely surrendering" to the power of the Holy Spirit. They believe it's the way one shows their submission to God.
Laying on of hands is used in ordainations, during prayer for healings, etc.
God knows your heart, and whether you are "real," or not.
