Dear HKSN16, i think it's all depend on how one feels about where one finds oneself at any point in time. for instance, if you are alive and the things that is happening in your life is full of tragedies, chaos, troubles, worries you name it and it's about you then, i suppose such a person could envy those that are dead as he/she will wish to join them cos he/she thinks it's better dead that face all these downs in life. More-so, is one that is dead and the place he/she ends up happens to be full of pains, hunger, sadness, thirst you name all the horrible things he/she is there which is what the Christian call being in hell then i believe that such person would have prefer to stay alive cos there is no resting place for him/her. In the instances, one could be tempted to say that the dead is envious of life and the life is envious of death as you so put it.
Nevertheless, if the opposite happens to be the case: i think the resulting effect will be on the contrary.
Generally, those that are alive hope to stay that way cos they do not know what lays on ahead and all the story being told? is not verymuch encouraged cos it's is believed by the Christians that where you will be depends on how you lived you life: very well? Heaven for you. not so well? pugatory. very bad? hell. most of all people fear hell alot and never wish to be there for any reason.
Since i had not experienced death: i think that those that are dead and not in a good place will desire to live again ie could be envious of live as you said. Those that have little problems in life would love to live on as they hope that things could be better tomorrow.
Hoped i answered your question. Have a nice day.

I don't know about life envious of death.
I think both feel the same of course to be alive is better.
In Christianity we learn that to die is to gain, but even with that there is the promise of everlasting "life" so it isn't really death
is it?

It is not so, in today's world life is at the mercy of death. And death certainly is more powerful...'coz once it comes everything gives way, and those who have seen death, know well enough how ruthless death is.
Life is the art of evading death for the longest possible time. Other things are eventuality.
