I know they give you earplugs, but my hearing has been damaged by loud noises, even though I wore earplugs
What is the noise level comparable with? How many dB?

I work in Radiology - depending on the scan it'll be between a buzzing.humming & a loud hammer banging on metal.

You'll be provided with headphones (you may even get to watch a video if you're lucky).

Happy scanning - Andy

its not a loud noise but more of a low level constant rumbling whilst active, if in for a little time (depends on what you are getting scanned) can be a bit annoying however should be given earplugs if you have previous hearing probs although if imaging above the neck you wont be allowed these but contact your doc.clinic before hand to discuss any fears

It's called water hammer. Like johnmyers001 says, may be a valve or washer in your cistern is a bit worn, maybe it's even just the splitpin that holds the end of the ballc ock. Something's allowing a vibration to start and that builds up & is magnified through the pipework. It's just a question of interfering with that vibration one way or another, either tweaking things in the cistern or even, I found, putting a piece of wood behind the pipe to damp the vibrations. Sometimes even just adjusting your stopcock slightly to change the speed of the water flow will do it. Have fun.

I am partially deaf, about 65% hearing loss. When I had my last one, it sounded like a deep 'tink tink' with a loud hum. Kind of like somebody hammering on metal pipes in the distance. Skin prickles, which made my arm hair stand on end. Unpleasant, but since the MRI doesn't take that long, it shouldn't effect your hearing at all.
