air port authorities communicates with the pilots using high frequency signals...using transmiters the message signal gets transmited to a particular air craft whose frequency is tuned to ground signal. The authorities able to find the airplane its altitude,its sped,direction using special system called RADAR(want more information about thi RADAR see wikipedia).now a days GPS(global positioning system) is used.just like our mobile communications........
